Avernakø Landhotel becomes partner in Geopark The South Fyn Archipelago

We are very proud to announce that we are now official partners in the Geopark South Funen Archipelago. Geopark The South Funen Archipelago is a collaboration between the four South Funen municipalities, Faaborg-Midtfyn, Svendborg, Langeland and Ærø. The Geopark extends over a large area and both over land and water.

“A geopark is defined as a geographical area where the unique geological design of the landscape is of decisive importance for life in the area. The aim is to create a strong common identity as a starting point for local development with respect for both landscapes, cultural heritage and wild nature. The Geopark must help ensure the best imaginable framework for locally rooted sustainable development.” (https://www.geoparkoehavet.dk/om-geoparken/om-geoparken)

In addition, it is expected that Geopark South Funen Archipelago will be named a UNESCO Global Geopark within the next two years. This will hopefully help to brand the Geopark abroad and thus attract tourists to our area.

The Geopark has six focus areas:

1. Geology and nature

We work to protect the geological values and localities of the areas within the Geopark, while at the same time strengthening local knowledge of and pride in the landscape and nature.

2. Education

Together with the school administrations, we develop a wide range of educational activities to increase knowledge, curiosity and a sense of responsibility for our landscape, nature and culture.

3. Active outdoor life

We support projects that, with a sense of both use and protection, expand the activity options and make nature accessible to both citizens and guests.

4. Geotourism

The tourism we attract must help to maintain and enhance our special geographical character, environment, heritage, aesthetics, culture and benefit and engage the local community.

5. Arts and cultural history

We create activities, collaborations and dissemination initiatives that support the vibrant cultural scene in order to cultivate, challenge and renew the special traditions and cultural heritage of the areas within the Geopark.

6. Research

The research is absolutely crucial for the geopark, because it makes us wiser about our world and how we develop and arrange ourselves most appropriately and sustainably.

We are very excited about what this will mean for us who live and work in the Geopark, but we are also really excited to see who we will attract in the future when we talk about tourism.

Sustainable tourism

There is a lot of talk these years about sustainable tourism. It is a very broad term, but Destination Fyn has adopted some of the UN’s global goals and works, for example, with sub-goals such as:

Resource efficiency: efforts that reduce material resource consumption.

More jobs: efforts that strengthen productive activities, create jobs, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation

Cultural and natural heritage: Efforts that strengthen the protection and preservation of the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

We, and all the other companies, can help work towards some of these sub-goals. Eg. At the hotel, we work hard to avoid wasting resources. In addition, we use local raw materials, e.g. fruits for our jam, our own meat, etc. All to increase the sustainability of what we do. You can find much more info about our work here on our website.
